Savanna in the City

Spencer Gordon PhotographSavanna in the City: Photos: Spencer Gordon PhotographA savanna sunset slowly unfurled in the historic Puck Building in New York City as guests attended a fundraiser planned by Kerry-Ann Bromberg for the Ubuntu Education Fund, which supports education and health in South Africa. Event designer Swank Productions Inc. used natural linens (TriServe Party Rentals), greens (Celebrate Flowers) and wood sculptures (ABC Carpet & Home) to create the feel. Donna Karan, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Iman, Kevin Bacon and other luminaries socialized in a VIP lounge furnished with linen sofas in neutral tones and benches from CORT Event Furnishings. After a silent auction, over 400 guests filled the grand ballroom under a ceiling lit as a sunset that slowly faded into a starry night (E.I. Read). Angélique Kidjo sang, and Tutu was the honorary guest speaker.

The Cone Campaign

The week-long consumer outreach events had “Cone Samaritans” roaming the streets handing out samples of the new offering, and also created “Cone Zones,” where visitors could taste The Cone or order a special delivery to friends and family via “Cone Messenger” to a number of locations. “We take great pride in creating and producing event marketing programs that deliver an immediate connection and recognition of the brand,” said Dennis Boyle, senior vice president of TBA.

You Should be Dancing

Guests at a disco-themed gala at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas entered a ballroom recarpeted in bright orange, with walls draped from floor to ceiling in billowy white chiffon lit with varying mirror ball patterns (Art of Light) and glass tables that designers had reconfigured to feature giant mirror balls in the bases. Complementing the tables were Ghost Chairs from Resource One. Ice Magic created custom centerpieces of round ice with imbedded mirror balls, and Ducky-Bobs provided silver chargers echoing the theme. Gary Osier Presents provided entertainment, which included — what else — a surprise performance by Donna Summer.

Got Chalk?

Got Chalk?: Photos Courtesy: Atomic DesignGot Chalk?: Photos Courtesy: Atomic DesignChalk it up to good event design — this year’s Robin Hood Foundation benefit at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, produced by Dan Parise of Live Nation, raised an unprecedented $48 million. Designer David Stark created a “chalk city” (engineered and fabricated by Atomic Design) of tall flats featuring chalked New York scenes that were customized for the event with names and faces of the foundation’s board members. During the cocktail hour, artists added to the creations, and guests were invited to participate as well. Video screens surrounding the dining area showed images carefully coordinated with the onstage and offstage action (a feat achieved by Doug Brant), and the night was capped off with a performance by Beyoncé.
