Atomic Design Inc. designed and provided the stage set for the Museum of the Moving Image’s Salute to Will Smith, which aired on Bravo recently.

It was the second time the Lititz, Pa.-based production and scenic design company had participated in the museum’s annual black-tie gala. In 2005, the event’s producer, Don Mischer Productions, contracted Atomic to design the Salute to Ron Howard.

“Both times were great experiences,” said Atomic’s Tom McPhillips. “We had a terrific team involved on the project, including my long-time friend, Tom Kenny, as lighting designer. We have the same modus operandi: create a simple framework that will provide big, effective looks in the house and great pictures on camera.”

This year, Atomic used its recently debuted Tufted Panels, designed by McPhillips.

“I like to make the stage setting appropriate to the artist being honored,” he said. “Since Will Smith got his start and is still very rooted in hip-hop music, I went for a bit more flash this year. The tufted panels are made of a metallic fabric which, when lit, gives the set a sophisticated ‘bling.’”

The Museum of the Moving Image, which houses a film, television, and digital media collection, holds the gala each year, saluting one of the entertainment industry’s greatest contributors. The salute in turn raises funds to support the museum’s education programs.

“We have the same modus operandi: create a simple framework that will provide big, effective looks in the house and great pictures on camera.”

The event aired on Bravo on January 12.
