Cobo Center in Detroit is certainly looking better these days. After being reorganized under a Regional Authority commission in 2009, it completed phase one of its extensive renovation last year and is now completing phase two.

Major changes made thus far include upgrading plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems and revamping food options. A Seattle’s Best Coffee stand is now open, and menu items from locally popular Andiamo’s Italian eatery have been incorporated into the center’s restaurant, the Vu, which is now under the management of Centerplate.

Phase two will include a 25,000-square-foot expansion to the front and back and extensive remodeling. Plans for phase three have not yet been announced, but the work is expected to be completed before the 2012 North American International Auto Show, which is traditionally held in Cobo Center every January.

When all is completed, the total cost for the renovation is expected to be around $300 million. www.cobocenter.com
